The Themes of Spiritual Poverty, Silence, and Caliphate Legitimacy in Attar's Khosrow Nameh

In Section 3 of Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar highlights the spiritual and political legitimacy of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. Attar emphasizes how Abu Bakr embraced the 'breeze of the Prophet's poverty' (faqr), relinquishing all worldly possessions except a simple woolen cloak (gelim). In addition to this complete material detachment, Attar underscores Abu Bakr's practice of perpetual silence (khamushi) and deep contemplation as markers of his high spiritual station, which ultimately qualified him as the first rightful successor (caliph) of Islam.
