The Transformative Power of Tears and Repentance in the Masnavi

In Book 1, Section 39 of the Masnavi, Rumi illustrates the spiritual significance of weeping and repentance through the story of a man punished with a twisted mouth for mocking the Prophet Muhammad. Upon the man's sincere remorse, Rumi explains that human vulnerability and tears are powerful attractors of divine grace. He famously states, 'Wherever a tear flows, mercy is shown,' establishing that genuine brokenheartedness and crying are essential prerequisites for transforming divine wrath into forgiveness and spiritual renewal.
