The Value of Spiritual Poverty (Faqr) in Attar's Dialogue with Ibrahim Adham
In Fariduddin Attar's The Conference of the Birds, the encounter between a complaining dervish and the renowned mystic Ibrahim Adham illustrates the profound worth of spiritual poverty (faqr). When the dervish laments his destitute condition, Ibrahim Adham questions whether he acquired his poverty too cheaply. The dervish responds that he purchased this state with his life and kingdom, valuing it above a hundred worlds. Through this dialogue, Attar distinguishes between mere material deprivation, which causes worldly sorrow, and true spiritual poverty, a highly prized rank of detachment achieved only through total self-sacrifice and the willing abandonment of earthly power for divine proximity.
