Theoretical Orientation to Reading Profile (TORP)
- The Theoretical Orientation to Reading Profile (TORP) has been shown to be a reliable, valid instrument for assessing teachers’ theoretical orientation to reading (Deford, 1985). This questionnaire assesses teachers’ scores on three dimensions: (a) phonics, which emphasizes smaller than word level units, with a gradual progression toward words and sentences, (b) skills, which emphasizes development of a sight-word vocabulary, and (c) whole language, which emphasizes familiarizing children with quality literature, and working down toward small language units.
