Transfer Equipment Selection and Code Basis

A transfer switch or similar transfer device is what lets a building move safely between utility power and generator power. It may be manual or automatic, but it must be rated for both the generator output and the circuits it will serve. Install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and use NEC Article 701 for legally required standby loads or NEC Article 702 for optional standby loads, depending on the application. A generator connection without a listed transfer device is not permitted because it can energize utility conductors and create a back-feed hazard for lineworkers.
