Active transport is when molecules are transported across the plasma membrane against the concentration gradient (from low to high concentration). Active transport requires energy in the form of ATP.

Passive transport is when compounds move with the concentration gradient. They move from a higher to lower concentration. Passive transport does not require energy to transport molecules.
