Comparing Bundles and MRS Along a Vertical Line

A vertical line on a work-leisure graph allows for the comparison of bundles with the same amount of free time. As an individual moves up this line to higher levels of consumption, their Marginal Rate of Substitution (MRS) increases, causing the indifference curves to become steeper. This occurs because when consumption is abundant relative to free time, the individual is more willing to sacrifice a larger amount of the plentiful good (consumption) to gain an additional unit of the scarcer good (free time). Conversely, at low levels of consumption, such as when struggling to afford food, the willingness to trade it for more free time is diminished.
