Virginia Johnson
Virginia Johnson was a researcher who, alongside William Masters, pioneered the scientific study of human sexual physiology. In 1966, they published a landmark book detailing the physiological responses of nearly 700 participants. Through direct observation of nearly 10,000 sexual acts—including intercourse and masturbation—they systematically mapped the human sexual response cycle, dividing it into four distinct phases: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution.
