Virtual reality for adolescents with social anxiety disorder
Virtual reality interventions have promising results for adolescents with SAD due to their familiarity with technology and less risk for in-person social situations. For example, virtual reality public speaking environments have been used to assess social anxiety symptoms by prompting the audience to look disinterested or puzzled towards the participant. Socially anxious adolescents showed higher distress with these stimulated environments than neutral environments and showed higher distress than nonsocial anxious youth. Many reported that the VR experience was engaging and realistic, which supports a focus on virtual reality exposure treatment therapies, especially for adolescents with social anxiety.
