Vulnerability of Highly Leveraged Banks to Asset Value Decline

Because banks are highly leveraged and must offer guaranteed returns on their liabilities, such as deposits, they are particularly vulnerable to unexpected drops in the value of their assets. Even a small decline in asset value can have severe consequences for a bank's financial health, potentially leading to insolvency.
