An exploratory analysis is a statistical test undertaken without a pre-existing hypothesis to discover unexpected relationships or interesting patterns in the data. Researchers conduct these analyses after completing their planned analyses to find new patterns that might provide the basis for future research.

Exploratory Analysis

When performing exploratory analyses, researchers are encouraged to extensively examine their data from multiple perspectives in what is often described as a 'fishing expedition'. This can involve analyzing demographic subsets separately, creating new composite variables, temporarily dropping anomalous data points, reorganizing information to highlight hidden trends, and finding additional evidence elsewhere in the data if a particular datum suggests a new hypothesis.

Exploratory Analysis Strategy

Researchers must clearly distinguish between planned and exploratory analyses in their reports to avoid misleading conclusions. Conducting multiple unplanned exploratory analyses increases the probability of finding patterns that occur purely by chance, raising the risk of a Type $$1$$ error. Consequently, exploratory findings must be treated with caution and replicated in subsequent studies; however, if unexpected interesting relationships are found, researchers should explicitly explain in their report that they might be worthy of additional research.
