While empirically confirming a hypothesis strengthens a scientific theory, it can never definitively prove the theory to be true. Scientists intentionally avoid using the word 'prove' because a positive finding might simply be a Type I error, multiple plausible theories might predict the identical outcome, and future tests could always produce disconfirming evidence.

Impossibility of Proving a Theory

The problem of induction is a philosophical concept illustrating why empirical observations can never definitively prove a universal rule, regardless of how many confirming instances are found. For example, observing thousands of white swans does not guarantee the truth of the statement 'All swans are white,' because the future discovery of a single black swan would instantly disprove the rule. This limitation explains why scientists consider even the most robust theories to be provisional and subject to revision.

Problem of Induction

Because statistical analyses are inherently probabilistic and all research methodologies contain potential flaws, absolute scientific proof does not exist. Instead of definitively proving that a theory is true, systematic empirical research provides varying degrees of scientific evidence. Consequently, theories are continually supported, weakened, or refined based on new data rather than being permanently proven.
