Woman as a Ray of the Divine in the Masnavi
In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, following the Bedouin husband's pacification by his wife's tears and tenderness, Rumi interjects a profound philosophical commentary on gender dynamics and the spiritual nature of women. Citing a prophetic tradition, he observes that women naturally prevail over wise and sensitive men, whereas ignorant men violently dominate women because they are driven by animalistic traits of anger and lust. Rumi draws a sharp distinction between the animal attributes of aggression and the human attributes of love, tenderness, and affection. Elevating the feminine principle to a sublime metaphysical level, Rumi concludes that woman is not merely an earthly beloved but a 'ray of the Real' (Haqq). In her capacity to inspire profound love and embody divine gentleness, she partakes in the divine essence, leading Rumi to boldly describe her metaphorically as possessing a creative force akin to the Creator rather than being a mere created object.
