Writing Layla's Name as a Substitute for the Absent Beloved in Haft Awrang

Majnun repeatedly writes Layla's name upon the desert sand even though the wind will erase it. The act is valuable not as durable communication but as a temporary encounter with the absent beloved. Her written name becomes a symbolic substitute through which Majnun preserves devotion, consoles himself, and transforms loss into an act of remembrance.
