Zhou et al. Linguistics and Misinformation Study Results

Comparing the number of shares between false posts with certain linguistic traits to true articles, the results were as follows:

  • The effect of persuasive words and uncertainty words on misinformation dissemination was significant.
  • Emotion words (both negative and positive) and comparative words did not have a significant impact on dissemination of false posts compared to true posts
  • Information richness had a complex, moderating effect
  • The interaction between images and persuasive and uncertainty words is positive and significant, but the interaction between videos and persuasive words and uncertainty is negative and significant.
  • The interaction between information richness and negative emotion words is positive and significant.
  • The interaction between images and comparative words is significant, but the interaction between comparative words and videos is nonsignificant
  • Videos did not positively influence misinformation dissemination, contradicting the hypothesis.
