Patients were grouped based on their BMI: 150 patients were considered overweight (BMI of 25-29.9) and 215 of them were considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30). The results of the study did not reveal an association between obesity and acute cardiac injury in COVID-19 patients (p=0.66).

The impact of obesity on COVID-19 complications: A retrospective cohort study 

A retrospective study was conducted in a New York City hospital with 504 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection. Among the participants, 150 patients were considered overweight (BMI of 25-29.9) and 215 of them were considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30). The results of the study showed a significantly higher risk of mortality within the overweight and obese groups (p=0.003 and p=0.04, respectively) than the normal BMI group. Male patients in the obese group were at a significantly increased risk of mortality compared to males in the normal BMI group (p=0.03). However, the risk of mortality among females in these groups were not significantly different (p=0.40). Patients who were overweight and age 65 and over had a significantly greater risk of mortality (p=0.002).

In-Hospital Mortality Related to Obesity in COVID-19 Patients

Specifically, males in the obese group had a greater risk than those in the normal BMI group but no such association was made for females. Patients age 45 and over in the obese group also had a higher risk.
