In-Hospital Mortality Related to Obesity in COVID-19 Patients
A retrospective study was conducted in a New York City hospital with 504 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection. Among the participants, 150 patients were considered overweight (BMI of 25-29.9) and 215 of them were considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30). The results of the study showed a significantly higher risk of mortality within the overweight and obese groups (p=0.003 and p=0.04, respectively) than the normal BMI group. Male patients in the obese group were at a significantly increased risk of mortality compared to males in the normal BMI group (p=0.03). However, the risk of mortality among females in these groups were not significantly different (p=0.40). Patients who were overweight and age 65 and over had a significantly greater risk of mortality (p=0.002).
