Concept

Risk of Intubation Related to Obesity in COVID-19 Patients

A retrospective study was conducted in a New York City hospital with 504 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection. Among the participants, 150 patients were considered overweight (BMI of 25-29.9) and 215 of them were considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30). Compared to the group with normal BMI, patients in the overweight and obese groups had a significantly higher risk of intubation (p=0.01 and p=0.001, respectively). Specifically, males in the obese group had a greater risk than those in the normal BMI group but no such association was made for females. Patients age 45 and over in the obese group also had a higher risk.
