Short Answer

Analyzing an Optimal Consumption Point

Consider a graph where the horizontal axis represents the quantity of Good A and the vertical axis represents the quantity of Good B. A downward-sloping straight line represents all the combinations of Good A and Good B that a consumer can afford. Several curved lines, convex to the origin, represent combinations of the two goods that give the consumer the same level of satisfaction; curves further from the origin represent higher levels of satisfaction. Point X is where one of these satisfaction curves is just tangent to the affordable combinations line. Point Y is on the same affordable combinations line but lies on a lower satisfaction curve. Explain why Point X represents a better choice for the consumer than Point Y.
