He and his successors are credited with the Hippocratic Corpus, which includes some of the oldest surviving medical texts. Marcus Terentius Varro ($${}116$$–$${}27$$ BC) was a prolific Roman writer and one of the earliest individuals to suggest that invisible entities could cause disease. In $${}1546$$, the Italian physician Girolamo Fracastoro proposed in his essay 'De Contagione et Contagiosis Morbis' that seed-like spores could be transferred between individuals through direct contact, exposure to contaminated clothing, or the air. He is now recognized as an early proponent of the germ theory of disease, which states that microbial infections cause diseases. However, his ideas were not widely accepted in the $${}16$$th century and were largely forgotten until the $${}19$$th century.

In the $${}11$$th century, the Persian physician Ibn Sina, sometimes referred to as Avicenna, proposed that tuberculosis was likely spread by people's breath when they were in close proximity to one another.
