Ancient Roman Sanitation

To protect the population from epidemics of waterborne illnesses, ancient Romans engineered sophisticated sanitation infrastructure. They constructed aqueducts to deliver fresh water into the city and built the Cloaca Maxima, a massive sewer system that directed waste away from urban areas and into the river Tiber.
