Girolamo Fracastoro

In 1546{}1546, the Italian physician Girolamo Fracastoro proposed in his essay 'De Contagione et Contagiosis Morbis' that seed-like spores could be transferred between individuals through direct contact, exposure to contaminated clothing, or the air. He is now recognized as an early proponent of the germ theory of disease, which states that microbial infections cause diseases. However, his ideas were not widely accepted in the 16{}16th century and were largely forgotten until the 19{}19th century.
