Bacteria with amphitricous flagella have flagellum or flagella at either end of the cell. The flagella may be tufts at the end of the cell.

Bacteria with a monotrichous flagellum have a singular flagellum that is usually found on of the ends of the cell.

The flagella is composed of the filament, hook and basal body. The hook and filament are composed of protein subunits called flagellin, which is synthesized within the cell. The filament extends outside the cell wall and is connected to the hook at the surface of the cell. The hook and basal body are embedded in the cellular envelope.
