Bousfield's (1935) Experiment on Semantic Encoding
In a 1935 study by William Bousfield, participants were asked to memorize a list of 60 words presented in a random order. Unbeknownst to the participants, these words belonged to four distinct categories based on their meaning. The results showed that during recall, participants naturally grouped the words into these categories, demonstrating that they had processed and encoded the words based on their semantic meaning.
