Calculating Percent Change

The percent change describes how much a quantity has increased or decreased over a specified period. To calculate the percent change, follow a two-step procedure. First, calculate the absolute amount of change by finding the difference between the new amount and the original amount (change=new amountoriginal amount\text{change} = \text{new amount} - \text{original amount}). Second, determine what percent the amount of change represents relative to the original amount by translating the conceptual question "change is what percent of the original amount?" into an algebraic percent equation.
