Concept

Characteristics and Outcomes in Patients With COVID-19 and Acute Ischemic Stroke

  • The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relationship between acute ischemic stroke and COVID-19 infection in the context of patient outcomes.

  • The study utilized a matched pair analysis of non-COVID-19 and COVID-19 patients.

  • The data was obtained from the Acute Stroke Registry, the Analysis of Lausanne Registry, and the Global COVID-19 Stroke Registry.

  • The study involved 336 patients and the average age of patients was 71.2 years.

  • It was found that the median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was higher in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 patients (10 versus 6).

  • It was also found that COVID-19 patients had higher risk for death and severe disability compared to non-COVID-19 patients.

  • The study’s findings suggest that COVID-19 patients with ischemic stroke have more severe outcomes as well as higher mortality rate than non-COVID-19 patients with ischemic stroke.
