Impact of COVID-19 on Outcomes in Ischemic Stroke Patients in the United States
-
The objective of this study was to analyze the outcomes of patients with comorbid ischemic stroke and COVID-19.
-
The data for this study was obtained from 312 hospitals in 46 states in the US through the Vizient Clinical Data Base®.
-
For primary analysis, 166,586 patients with only ischemic stroke were used as controls and 2,086 patients with both ischemic stroke and COVID-19.
-
For secondary analysis, the same 2,086 patients with both ischemic stroke and COVID-19 were matched with 2,086 patients with both ischemic stroke and pneumonia.
-
It was found that patients with both ischemic stroke and COVID-19 had significantly increased mortality rates and were more likely to be male, younger, and Black or Hispanic.
-
It was also found that among the matched cohort of patients, those with both COVID-19 and ischemic stroke were at a higher risk of death and had lower rates of favorable discharge from the hospital.
