Chemical fixation is a method of preparing specimens for microscopy by treating them with chemical agents. It is often preferable to heat fixation for tissue specimens. Agents such as acetic acid, ethanol, methanol, formaldehyde (formalin), and glutaraldehyde are used to denature proteins, halt biochemical reactions, and stabilize cell structures within the tissue samples.
