Heat fixation is a method of attaching a specimen to a microscope slide by applying heat. To heat-fix a sample, a thin layer of the specimen, known as a smear, is spread on the slide. The slide is then briefly heated over a heat source. This process secures the cells to the slide, kills the microorganisms, and preserves their structural integrity for observation.
