Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for OCD

Until 1966 OCD was widely thought to be untreatable until the breakthrough treatment of Exposure and Response Prevention therapy. Today, CBT for OCD is broken up into two main components, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Therapy (defined in child nodes). Both of these combined can help by utilizing your bodies natural ability of habituation to produce a less panicked response to an individuals trigger. Progressive exposure to trigger in a safe environment such as a therapist's office allows for patient to face their fears directly and lessen the effect of the fear over time. The amount of weeks of treatments and the amount of ERP and Cognitive Therapy varies by the individual and can be used in combination with medication.
