Comparison

Comparison of Formal and Informal Institutions

Formal institutions, such as laws and property rights, are explicitly codified and enforced by a state or recognized authority. In contrast, informal institutions consist of unwritten rules, social norms, and conventions that are enforced through community pressure, reputation, and trust. While formal institutions provide a clear legal framework, informal institutions are often crucial for governing transactions in areas where legal enforcement is weak or absent, demonstrating the complementary nature of these two types of 'rules of the game'.
