The Reciprocal Relationship Between Institutions and Economic Activity

A central insight in institutional economics is that the relationship between institutions and economic activity is reciprocal. While institutions (rules) constrain and shape economic behavior, the patterns of economic activity and the problems that arise from them can, in turn, lead to the evolution of existing institutions or the creation of new ones. For example, the rise of e-commerce created a need for new rules around digital payments and online trust.
