Emergence of Institutions in Digital Marketplaces

Early digital marketplaces, like eBay, initially operated with minimal formal rules. As they grew, issues such as non-payment, fraudulent listings, and inaccurate descriptions became common. In response, the platforms themselves developed new institutions: user reputation systems (feedback scores), buyer protection policies, and internal dispute resolution mechanisms. These informal, platform-specific rules emerged directly from the economic activity and were essential for the market's survival and growth, often preceding or influencing formal government regulation.
