Confirmation Bias as a Reinforcer of Stereotypes
Confirmation bias serves to strengthen stereotypes by causing an individual to selectively process information. When interacting with a person from a stereotyped group, one tends to focus on behaviors that align with the stereotype while ignoring or dismissing actions that contradict it. This cognitive shortcut involves actively seeking out information that supports preconceived notions, thereby reinforcing the original stereotype.

In the context of scientific research, what does confirmation bias refer to?
A psychology student strongly believes that listening to classical music improves exam performance. When reviewing research articles on the topic, she thoroughly reads and remembers the studies showing a benefit of classical music but skims past studies showing no effect. This selective pattern of attending to evidence is an example of confirmation bias.
