Conflict of Interest as a Barrier to Successful Negotiation

Even when cooperation offers mutual gains, negotiations can fail due to conflicts of interest. This problem arises when multiple cooperative outcomes are possible, each distributing the benefits differently among the parties. The resulting disagreement over how to share the gains—with each party bargaining over their contributions and benefits to secure a larger share for themselves—can prevent a successful agreement from being reached.
