COVID-19 in children and adolescents in Europe: a multinational, multicentre cohort study
This study included 82 participating hospitals involved in the existing Paediatric Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group (ptbnet) among 25 countries in Europe. The authors assessed 582 children and adolescents with severe COVID-19 between April 1-24, 2020. The authors found 3 risk factors to be attributed with ICU admission among children: being younger than 1 month old, male sex, pre-existing medical conditions, and presence of lower respiratory tract infection upon arrival and the hospital. Overall case fatality rate in the study was low (0.69) in comparison to studies on adult populations, suggesting that while severe COVID-19 cases occur in children, fatality is rare.
