Cultural Differences in Visual Perception and Context
A study by Masuda and Nisbett (2001) revealed that culture influences how individuals perceive visual information. When shown an aquarium scene, Japanese participants from a collectivistic culture were better at recognizing objects when they were presented in their original context. In contrast, American participants from an individualistic culture were unaffected by changes in the context during object recall, indicating a difference in how much attention is paid to the background versus the focal object.

Cultural Differences in Job Turnover Predictors
A multinational corporation is designing a new employee bonus program. Two options are proposed:
- Program A: Bonuses are awarded to the top 5% of individual performers based on their personal sales figures and achievements. This system is designed to foster competition and reward individual excellence.
- Program B: Bonuses are distributed equally among all members of a team if the team collectively meets or exceeds its goals. This system is designed to encourage collaboration and group success.
In a country where the culture strongly emphasizes group harmony and views people as highly interdependent, which program is most likely to be successful and why?

Cultural Lens in Art Perception
An international marketing firm designs an advertisement for a new camera. They create two versions: one shows a detailed, close-up image of the camera against a simple white background, and the other shows the camera being used by a person within a busy, scenic landscape. The firm tests both ads on audiences in Germany (a culture that tends to emphasize individualism) and in Thailand (a culture that tends to emphasize group context). Based on established findings regarding cultural influences on visual processing, which outcome is most likely?
