Cultural Ideals and Disability

Many societies have beauty standards that do not include people with disabilities. This creates a large gap for those who do not fit these ideals. In some Asian cultures, individuals with disabilities are often seen as weak, frail, and nonsexual. These views are very different from the common ideas of strength and beauty. Both men and women deal with these stereotypes, but women face extra pressure to be thin, attractive, and submissive. This causes a deep internal conflict for many disabled women. They often feel that their bodies do not meet societal expectations, which affects their mental health.
