Debate on the Sequence of Cognition and Emotion

The sequence of cognitive processing and emotional experience is a central debate in psychology. While some theories propose that cognition precedes emotion, others, such as the views of Robert Zajonc and Joseph LeDoux, argue that certain emotional reactions can occur before, or even entirely without, cognitive interpretation. This highlights the complexity and ongoing research into the relationship between thought and feeling.
