Zajonc's Theory of Emotion

Proposed by Robert Zajonc, this theory asserts that some emotional reactions can occur independently of, or even before, cognitive interpretation. An example is the immediate feeling of fear from an unexpected loud noise. This perspective also accounts for 'gut feelings,' which are instantaneous and unanalyzed feelings of liking or disliking something or someone.
