Decision-Making at a Chemical Plant

A chemical plant is currently producing at its capacity and is considering manufacturing one additional barrel of its product. To do so, it will incur costs for additional raw materials, employee overtime, and the electricity needed to run the machinery for longer. This extra production will also release a harmless but foul-smelling gas, which is expected to lower the property values of nearby homes by a small amount. From the perspective of the chemical plant's managers making a purely financial decision, explain which of these costs would be factored into their calculation for producing the extra barrel and why the other costs would be excluded. In your explanation, focus only on the costs directly influencing the plant's decision.
