Sleep disturbances are common in depression and these disturbances may continue despite improved symptoms. Sleep disturbances can perpetuate mood disturbances and increase relapse risk.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) teaches patients that have depression that are currently in remission to become aware of their thoughts and feelings and how to approach  them differently from before.  MBCT has shown to be significantly important in helping prevent relapse. These include: significant changes in weight or appetite, sleep disturbances (insomnia or hypersomnia), observable psychomotor changes (agitation or retardation), persistent fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, difficulty with concentration or decision-making, and recurrent thoughts of suicide.

Major depressive disorder is characterized by its episodic course, where symptoms reach their full intensity for a period before subsiding. While these episodes may extend for several months, about 70% of individuals recover within one year. Nevertheless, the disorder can have long-term consequences, with approximately 12% of individuals still showing significant impairment after five years. Furthermore, even among those who recover, many continue to experience minor, fluctuating symptoms over the long term.

Researchers examined 88 patients diagnosed with MDD and their emotional thought patterns using the Multidimensional Anger Inventory and the Anger Rumination Scale. They found significant positive correlations between anger, anger rumination, emotion regulation, and depression, proving that anger is closely related with depression and its symptoms.
