Prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder in the U.S.

Major depressive disorder is so common that it is often called the 'common cold' of psychiatric disorders. Statistics from the U.S. indicate that each year, approximately 6.6% of the population experiences the disorder, while the lifetime prevalence, or the proportion of the population that will experience it at some point, is 16.9%.
