Discussion: Estimating the asymptomatic proportion of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship, Yokohama, Japan, 2020
The asymptomatic proportion of SARS-CoV-2 is a critical public health policy indicator that can be used to guide the intensity and range of social distancing measures implemented. It helps to complete the picture to determine the actual burden of disease and transmission of the virus. Limitations addressed include greater PCR-testing focus on symptomatic cases, passengers and crew do not make up a random sample, and presence of symptoms may be associated with other health conditions already present at baseline.
