Role and Mandate of the European Central Bank (ECB)

The European Central Bank (ECB) is responsible for setting monetary policy for the entire eurozone. Its primary mandate is to maintain price stability across the currency union as a whole. Consequently, the ECB will not adjust its policy in response to economic shocks that are confined to a single member country, such as Spain, if those shocks do not impact the overall inflation rate of the eurozone.
