Evaluating Explanations for Cooperative Behavior

In single-interaction, two-player games where defecting offers a higher individual payoff regardless of the other player's choice, experimental results consistently show that a substantial minority of participants choose to cooperate. One common explanation for this is that these players are motivated by altruism. Critically evaluate this explanation. In your response, discuss at least one strength and one potential weakness or alternative explanation for the observed cooperative behavior.
