Explaining Anomalous Cooperation

In a standard, one-shot prisoners' dilemma game, the model of pure self-interest predicts that both players will choose to defect. However, experiments consistently show that a significant minority of players choose to cooperate. Briefly explain how the concept of altruism can account for this observed deviation from the predicted outcome.
