Extending Graph Axes for Equations with Large Values

A standard coordinate grid with both xx and yy axes running from about 10-10 to 1010 is sufficient for many textbook equations, but not all linear equations fit within this range. When the y-intercept or other key values in the equation involve large positive or large negative numbers, the axes must be extended to accommodate these values. This situation arises frequently in real-world applications, where data often involves numbers far beyond the typical 10-10 to 1010 window. To graph such equations, select a scale for the axes that is large enough to include the y-intercept and still allows room to count out the rise and run to locate a second point.
