Graphing y<5y < 5

To graph the inequality y<5y < 5, apply the three-step graphing procedure: Step 1 — Graph the boundary line. Replace the << symbol with == to obtain the boundary line y=5y = 5. This is a horizontal line. Because the inequality uses << (strict), draw the boundary line as a dashed line. Step 2 — Test a point. Choose (0,0)(0, 0) since it does not lie on the boundary line: 0<50 < 5 is true, so (0,0)(0, 0) is a solution. Step 3 — Shade the correct side. Because the test point (0,0)(0, 0) is a solution, shade the half-plane that contains (0,0)(0, 0) — the region below the dashed line y=5y = 5.
