Children most often acquire SARS-CoV-2 through household contact with an infected person. Retrospective studies from China estimated household secondary attack rates among pediatric contacts at 4-7%, whereas a review of New York state cases (excluding New York City) reported a 27% secondary attack rate among children under 18 years. Other documented routes include in utero and peripartum transmission and possible transmission through breast milk or during infant feeding. Transmission from teachers or school staff to students, and among students within school settings, has also been reported.
