Its primary function is to block most of the direct light traveling from the illuminator, which produces a hollow cone of light focused directly onto the specimen. This critical modification ensures that only light refracted or reflected by the specimen itself can enter the objective lens.

The diaphragm is an adjustable mechanism situated between the condenser lens and the specimen that regulates light exposure. If less-than-maximal illumination is required, users can easily control the amount of light striking the specimen by opening or closing the diaphragm.

A rheostat functions as a dimmer switch on a microscope, providing an alternative method to regulate image brightness. It achieves this by directly controlling the electrical intensity of the high-intensity bulb within the illuminator.
